Hints from the staff at Vienna Paint

A common question our customers ask is how to avoid having to do the job again a few years; Our answer is to do the job right the first time by using a quality product.

Use only premium products to prolong the life of the job. These paints and stains have better color retention and durability because of their chemical composition. This will save you money and time in the long term.

Labor costs account for 85-90% of the total costs of re-coating your home. Product will account for 10-15% of the costs even when you use high quality products that cost slightly more initially. Your savings come from better durability and color retention of these products and the fact that you have to recoat less often.

No shortcuts should be allowed here. You wash your car before you wax it. Your home should be thoroughly cleaned, scraped, sanded and caulked before any product is applied. The lack of proper preparation is the single most important reason paints or stains fail.

There are alkyd (oil) and acrylic (latex) products for use on the exterior or interior of your home. Both are excellent products but experience tells us that in this region, with its variable weather conditions, acrylic (latex) products hold up somewhat better than the alkyd (oil) based products. One reason is the alkyd (oil) products dry to a very hard finish while latex finishes retain an ability to flex with the house as temperature changes and they tolerate moisture much better. Ask our staff for more info.

Like lawyers and doctors there are good ones and some not so good. We recommend you obtain estimates from 2 or 3 different contractors and talk directly with each one. After your discussion you will be able to discern which will do a thorough job. Be certain the contractor is both licensed and insured- this is the responsibility of the homeowner both factually and legally. Cost could be significant factor but all the information taken together will help you to decide. Vienna Paint is very careful in referrals of contractors because a bad recommendation reflects on our business. We can help you here.
